Abstract

The hydrometeorological particularities of the Gibara-Guardalavaca beach littoral are analyzed, in
order develop the study, three main sections were developed: physical-geographic characteristic wind, wave and astronomical tides regimes, peculiarities
of flooding episodes, and the meteorological systems which generated them, and tropical cyclones. As sources of information, local testimonies obtained
from interviews to local residents and press reports were used, as well as archives from INSMET and NHC, the letter available in Internet. The main results obtained
were: chronology of flooding events in the period 1933-2010, typical synoptic systems which produce them, and calculation of the return period
of tropical cyclones. It is concluded that the meteorological systems produce flooding episodes are the tropical cyclones and combination of low with migratory
high, for the occurrence of coastal flooding it is necessary a significant wave height greater 3.0 m with duration of more 6 hours. With the statistical
method used, it is expected the occurrence of hurricane at least once every seven years. The results obtained are applicable in the elaboration in short and
