Abstract

The main objective of this research project was to develop an « Storm Surge Digital Atlas of for the Cuban archipelago. It performs statistical analysis of tropical cyclones (TC) that have affected coastal settlements, keys and roads leading to the keys of the Cuban archipelago, using on CT HURDAT database from the NHC of The United States in the stage that covers the period from 1851 to 2005. Where established the objects to study in the region to investigate, the angle of impact of CT, points calculation, and the n run the simulation of high the Storm surge to the passage of these tropical organisms with the High Resolution Numerical Model MONSAC3.1 (Numerical Modeling of storm surges around Cuba), displaying the maximum envelope of the Waters. This whole process is done for different intensities of the CT according to the International Saffir-Simpson scale, taking the initial values of minimum air pressure and maximum wind for each interval of the scale; it also simulates the effects from tropical storms. Hazard maps for Storm surges for different return periods are presented.
The Storm surge Digital Atlas is displayed on personal computers through a simple software application for any user. In real time works the Atlas allows sufficient time to know what could be the possible situation with respect to the storm surge. This Atlas is intended to use in the operational forecasting service in the Institute of Meteorology of the Republic of Cuba. It concludes with a final report that includes the User Manual Digital Atlas and its corresponding electronic version
