Abstract

The scientific experimental design of the Randomized Convective Cloud Seeding Experiment in Extended Areas (EXPAREX) is presented. This experiment is being implemented in Camagüey and adjacent regions from August 2005, as a follow up of the experiments which were carried out in the same region in the period 1985-1990, which showed the possibility of obtaining significant rainfall increase by seeding individual convective clouds and cloud systems which comply certain conditions, with silver iodide flares. The methodology applied in EXPAREX consists in seeding silver iodide flares in the upper part of developing convective clouds whose topes reach from 6 to 7 km at seeding time, using launching systems ion board an An-26 aircraft. The seeding altitude is nearly 6 km, which corresponds to a temperature of nearly -7 °C. The An-26 is instrumented with basis cloud physics equipment which allows to assess if the experimental clouds fulfill the seeding criteria. The dynamic seeding hypothesis, in which the experiment is based, is explained and argued. The experimental unit is defined as well as the flight, seeding and evaluation methodologies. Criteria for experimental day and experimental cloud selection are also discussed. The total amount of experimental units which is needed to obtain a statistically significant result is estimated using the results of previous experiments.
