Influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the climate of the inter-American seas.
Main Article Content
Abstract
There have been several advances made in understanding the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), but there are still uncertainties regarding its level of influence on the marine climate of the inter-American seas. In addition, the fact that most of the studies related to the subject refer to medium and high latitudes, while for the tropical region there are few researches that directly address the influence of the NAO in the behavior of the oceanographic and atmospheric variables that make up the climate of this region. That is the reason why this paper determines the influence of the NAO on oceanographic variables in the inter-American seas in the period of 1980-2016. The GrADS software is used to determine the correlation coefficient between the variables and the NAO index. It was obtained that the highest values of the coefficient appear in the area of the Caribbean Sea and that six months before NAO event in the relationship established between the sea surface temperature and the NAO index, a zonal pattern is observed.
