Abstract

The local and transboundary air pollution analysis of precursor compounds NOx of wet acid deposition and ozone formation in Cuba, allowed getting in formation on the spatial distribution of emissions of NOx and SO2 gaseous compound in the domain study, making an emissions inventory from local (Cuban power plants) and transboundary combustion sources (Southeast U.S.). This study characterized spatial synoptic classification in the dry and rainy season of 2007 in relationship with the back trajectories of air masses using HYSPLIT_4 model, that impact the distribution of gaseous precursor emissions from NOx local and transboundary emission sources. Besides, the implementation of the model NNR/ CALMET/ CALPUFF allowed featuring the variations in the concentrations of gaseous precursor compounds NOx and wet deposition of nitrate. Also, it was estimated the surface ozone level concentration from the implementation of an Eulerian model. The result discussion shows that the estimated values of nitrogen oxides NOx correspond to the regional background levels (less than 2 μg/m3) and wet deposition of nitrate (30-90 ng/m2) verified that showed the highest rates in areas with local anthropogenic emissions of precursors of acidity. On the other hand, the values of surface ozone level concentrations calculated from the Eulerian model used, contributed as support to the knowledge about the global background levels that would be produced due to the limitation of the sources emissions inventory used. Despite of simplicity and limitations of pre-existing information, the results from modeling the transport and chemical transformations of precursor compounds NOx at regional level have allowed an adequate tool for air quality management and planning in Cuba.
