Abstract

During the period November 2008 - April 2010 measurements of organic acids were carried out in rainwater monthly samples collected at 11 pollution monitoring stations for Cuba´s atmosphere. The objective of this study was to analyze the contribution of organic acids to the acid rain. For this reason, the sulfate ions, nitrate and organic compounds was quantified by ion exchange chromatography. It was determined that the organic species, formate and acetate contributed more to the acidity of rain in rural stations than in urban areas, mainly in areas where biomass burning is likely to occur.
