Abstract

Based on a previous estimation of Circulation Atmospheric Index, the variations on regional atmospheric circulation and the rainfall over Cuba for 1961-2004 period were assessed. The relationship between rainfall and circulation mechanisms was established through a simple linear model as well as using a Principal Component Analysis methodology. The results shown that zonal circulation explain more that 30% of the precipitation variability over the western of Cuba in winter, while the variability of rainfall in summer is explained in more than a 40% by the meridional circulation process. The meridional flows also play a determined role on the precipitation behavior during summer, mainly in association with the warm and wet south flows associated in the low levels with the persistence of the Atlantic High Pressure.
