Abstract

During the dry period of the year, associated with the winter season, Cuba receives a greater influence of extratropical organisms, among which are cold fronts, the “Sures” and the extratropical lows (BE). The latter despite their great importance, have been only studied in applied research for their role in other phenomena and weather conditions.
Based on the chronological study of the extratropical lows that have affected the Cuban archipelago, in the period between the winter of 1950-1951 and 2007-2008 made by Pila (2009) was designed the Synoptic Climatology (CS) of these winter systems, with similar serial length and is presented in this work. Are obtained mean confi gurations of different variables and selected meteorological fields, among which are (sea level pressure, relative humidity, geopotential height in the lower, middle and upper troposphere, wind fi eld and precipitable water). Also addressed the seasonal and interseasonal behavior of extratropical low that affected Cuba in the chosen period. The areas of the continent and Gulf of Mexico, proved to be those that contribute most to the number of BE affecting Cuba, mainly to the western region, with an average of 11 systems per winter season. And the January-February-March as the period of greatest frecuency with the Northeast direction as the most frequent. Also addressed the variability that BE presented under the forcing of ENSO event.
