Abstract

Given the lack of a general study on the spatial distribution of fogs in Cuba, this work proposes a characterization of the spatial variation of fogs in the national territory through the elaboration of maps of percent of occurrence of observations and number of days with fog and mist. The interpolation method applied is based on Cressman objective analysis with distances between grid points and stations weighted according to a set of base fi elds such as elevation, distance to the coast and soil available moisture, vegetation and land use, which allowed to defi ne the representativeness of stations in different directions. The steepest descent algorithm was applied to adjust the weight of the different base fi elds so that the errors at the stations was minimized. This method of interpolation proved that it can solve particularities of the spatial distribution that are missed by other general purpose methods. Fogs and mists have similar distributions, with low values near the coasts and high values in mountainous regions as La Gran Piedra and Sagua – Baracoa and in the neighborhood of important water bodies as the Valley of the Cauto, or valleys with particular characteristics, as Bainoa.
